Our New Process for Scalable Books

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

I am currently finishing up a fairly complex site for an artist & children’s author. Part of what the site requires is a reading interface for the author’s books. I used a ready-made solution to start of with, but there is no way to mass upload book pages and the “solution” does not accept PDF files, which are best for books because they can scale the text to any size and still look great. In addition, the format accepts SWFs, but there is no easy way to print to a generic SWF from Microsoft word, which the author had the book in. So, I used Acrobat Pro to split his 132-page book into 132 PDFs. I think used a command-line tool to convert each page into a seperate SWF. I then pasted the name of the 132 files into a CSV fie and imported it into the MySQL database the “solution” uses. Then, I uploaded the 132 SWFs into the pages folder on the server. Now we have an infinitely scalable Flash flip book out of Microsoft Word. You can see the result at books.dougdrago.com
